Tips for Aspiring Authors [#17] Don’t be a one-hit-wonder

When I think of one-hit-wonders, I think of a recording artist who had a popular song years ago, and that was all they were ever known for. There are some one-hit-authors out there as well: one-book-wonders.

What ever happened to the author of ____?

Ever wonder what happened to the author who wrote the book (insert book name)? Aspiring authors, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, write and keep on writing. Don’t just write one book and think it’s going to be the best thing ever written. We all think that. Therefore, write and keep writing. Build up an arsenal of books and short stories if you have ideas. Keep readers wondering when your next book is coming out.

It used to aggravate the heck out of me when someone would read a book in a day and ask, so when’s the next one coming out? I’d think, are you for real? It took me all year to do this project; but I get it. It just means that I did a great job and the reader wants to feel that warm fuzzy feeling they felt while reading my awesome book. It’s a great motivator to know that people, especially people who don’t know you, are trying to fill a void by reading other books while they wait for your next awesome book. : )

So that being said, get to writing. When you finish, start another project.

Perhaps the best advice ever given to new authors. Granted, you can possibly have ONE book in you, but for the rest of us who want to be called an ‘author’ and not just a ‘writer’, you must start thinking about the future. In other words… what else has the author of ‘The Help’ written?

LOL, Corey! Thats true. Maybe she has more coming. If not, maybe being a one-hit-wonder isn’t a bad thing (in her case.)

  2. Great informational article, Daphine!

I’ve enjoyed what I have viewed on your site so far and will be back again.

    Keep up the great work!
