Tips for Aspiring Authors [#21] Never give Up–Diana Nyad style

As I drank my morning cup of coffee and watched Willie Geist of NBC’s The Today Show interview Diana Nyad this morning, her words, Never give up, resonated with me and I celebrated with her in spirit.

It is so encouraging to see someone set a goal, no matter how absurd it may see to everyone else, and actually accomplish it. How many times have I said those same words, Never give up, right here on BWL?

Yesterday when I saw the CNN Breaking News text alert come across my phone, I tweeted this: THAT’S WHAT I’M TALKIN’ BOUT! CNN Breaking News – Diana Nyad, 64, is about 2 miles shy of finishing her swim from Cuba to Florida, a goal she’s pursued for 35 years.

It was so exciting, exhilarating even, to get that text because I know what it feels like to accomplish a goal that you have to keep chipping away at before it comes to fruition. She worked hard for 35 years to do this, enduring unfavorable conditions, nausea, attacks from sea life and pure fatigue. Although I can’t speak for her, I imagine there were days when she may have wondered, Why am I doing this? But she kept going—she never gave up!

So, what say you? Trying to write your first story? The characters aren’t coming together? The story isn’t poppin’ off the pages yet? Do you have a case of brain freeze, brain drain, or writer’s block and you feel like saying Oh, just forget it?

Don’t do it! NEVER GIVE UP!

Keep on pushing until you are finished. Word by word, character by character, rewrite by rewrite, just keep moving. If you have to think of a new strategy to get it done, think of it. Solicit help from others if you need to and do it. It’s your goal, your vision to complete and it doesn’t matter how long it takes, just do it and NEVER GIVE UP!

Don’t forget to send me your progress praise reports as you reach milestones on your writing journey. (Tweets @daphinerobinson,,

I needed that!!! I was writing the other night. My daughter asked…”are you working on your second book?” I said, “no love…working on edits for the first one…). She said…”UGH…you’ve been doing that since like…November.”
